Enemies Tier List

Lead designer Ez Jämsen described two enemy factions: Revenants (more zombified, typically melee, larger numbers) and corrupted soldiers (ranged, a little smarter, smaller groups). The Steam mature description adds wolves and humanoids with blood. Trailers and train-defense notes add eldritch shapes that do not politely fit a WW1 firing line. This page ranks threat to a typical pilgrimage, not cinematic scariness.

Letter grades follow the Tier List hub. S means it causes wipes even when your guns are fine.

S — The blizzard (and the thermometer)

Not a faction. Still the boss. Official copy: the frost creeps, the blizzard blinds, slows, and suffocates, heat is survival. HUD shots at −28 °C on a cab window are the briefing. You can outshoot a pack and still lose the walk home. Counterplay is not a weapon mod; it is Survival, clothes, time-boxes, and a train that still has Heat.

If your recap is “we had the loot,” you were beaten by S-tier weather, not by a soldier.

S — Train-defense waves

2026 integrated train-defense encounters into obstacle-clearing. Engine noise is a beacon. These fights are S because they hit the save point while half the crew is still in a cellar. Mix is whatever the director wants — Revenants on the rails, worse things in the white, windows already smashed, as in playtest carriage shots.

Counterplay is a co-op rear/engine job, doors as angles, and Relics saved for this window — Relics. A machine gun is B until you can feed it; a shotgun in a doorway is still the honest gun.

A — Revenants

Melee, numbers, zombified. They win when you panic-dump a rifle mag in a corridor or when four looters leave the carriage empty. They lose to shotguns, melee finishers, and doors. They become S if they stack with weather on the walk home.

Do: funnel. Train aisles and bunker doors are the map.

Don’t: backpedal into open snow with a pistol and a torch because a cellar felt cramped.

A — Corrupted soldiers

Ranged, fewer, smarter. They win when a crew of shotgun tourists peeks a long village street. They lose to rifles, patience, and not treating every ruin like a Revenant nest.

Call the type. “Lots” is how rifles die to Revenants and shotguns die to soldiers. Scout job: co-op.

B — Wolves and other fauna

Listed in the mature description, visible in snowy exterior shots as four-legged threats near the consist. B because they punish sloppy spacing and empty hands, not because they rewrite the loop. Melee or a pistol should handle a single animal if you are not already hypothermic. They climb to A in a blizzard when they delay an exfil you already cannot afford.

B — Eldritch dungeon pieces

Trailers and shrine objectives (“THE TRIAL BELOW”) exist to make you greedy. These encounters are B if you use multiple exits and turn-back rules. They are S if you treat a hidden shrine as mandatory. Survival’s turn-back list is the real counter, not a special bullet type we have not been given.

C — Anything you fight after you should have left

The enemy is optional; the thermometer is not. A C-tier rat in a corner becomes a wipe if you empty a rifle to feel complete. This row is here so Discord arguments have a place to put “we died to nothing.”

What will change

Spring 2026 already added new enemy variations. Early Access is supposed to add more situations, especially in co-op. Faction names should survive; densities and specials will not. When patch notes exist, they go on updates. Until then, if a video claims a secret third army with a proper noun you cannot find in FakeFish or Shiro posts, it is unverified.

Practice in the tutorial: identify melee swarm versus gunline, then leave. Identification is the rank-up. Damage tables can wait for 1.0.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What enemies are in Frostrail?

Officially: Revenants (melee swarms) and corrupted soldiers (ranged, fewer). Mature notes mention wolves and humanoids. Trailers show eldritch dungeon and train-defense threats.

What is the most dangerous threat?

The blizzard plus any fight that hits the train while the crew is split. Individual Revenants are not the wipe; the walk home and the undefended engine are.

Should I use the same gun for every enemy?

No. Shotguns for Revenant doors, rifles for soldiers. See the weapon tier list.

Do I have to fight the shrine monster?

Not if the level has another exit and your heat or ammo is the scarce resource. Greed is how B-tier set pieces become S-tier wipes.
