The Frostrail world
Rails, tundra, camps, vaults — a map of stop types, not a fake GPS.
There is no public interactive map of Frostrail. Anyone selling pin codes for a named mountain is guessing. What exists is a rail-directed frozen empire: you ride, you stop, you gamble a walk, you come back. This page is the geography FakeFish keeps repeating — tundra, mining camps, villages, wreckage, underground vaults, dungeons — and the 2026 change that matters for routing: levels with multiple exit points.
Pair it with How to Play for the stop loop and Survival for the thermometer. Lore names live on story. Guns do not make a bad exit good.
Rails first, sandbox second
Marketing says open-world survival FPS. Play is still a pilgrimage. The train is the only reliable way forward. The Eden Engine decides how long a stretch lasts. Spring notes added progression that carries between levels and new levels featuring multiple exits. That is a campaign of connected maps with optional deathtraps, not a borderless loot desert.
Read a stop as a node:
- Approach on tracks (defense can spawn while you clear obstacles).
- A named kind of ruin beside the line.
- A walk whose length is paid in heat.
- Zero, one, or more underground mouths.
- An exit that either continues the pilgrimage or just feels like one.
If two exits exist, the shrine is an invitation. Crafting can wait on the train; curiosity cannot refund a wipe.
Stop types (official language)
Tundra / blizzard between. Expanded in 2026 with new landscapes and nature assets. This is the timer, not the loot pinata. Clothes and a time-box beat a crate in a drift. HUD shots of −28 °C on a cab window are the briefing.
Mining camps. Food and materials in forgotten industry. Usually closer to the rails than a vault. Good first-hour nodes. Watch for Revenant numbers in cluttered sheds — enemies.
Villages / lost settlements. Longer sightlines. Corrupted soldiers (ranged, fewer, smarter) like roofs and streets. Bring a rifle lane, not four shotguns. Official copy: ice-bound settlements, remnants of a former empire.
Wreckage. Break-in loot with awkward angles. Treat like a camp until a mouth opens downward.
Underground vaults / bunkers / dungeons. Greater rewards, deadly cost. 2026 overhauled dungeons with modular assets and improved lighting. Relics hide here and activate on the train — Relics. Playtest objectives like “THE TRIAL BELOW” and “Search the unknown for a hidden shrine” are bait with a tracker, not a court order.
Train itself. A moving biome: heat, benches, Relic buttons, windows that become firing ports. If you do not count it as a location, you will strip its walls for “visibility.”
How far from the consist
Official line: every step away from the train is a gamble. Practical translation:
- If you cannot see a window or hear the engine, you are on a dungeon clock even in “just snow.”
- Engine noise pulls threats. Long walks home are the exam. Rear guard: co-op.
- Multiple exits mean you can skip a vault and still advance. Use that. Greed is how B-tier shrines become S-tier weather plus soldiers.
There is no published scale in metres. Do not inventory a “3-minute rule” as FakeFish gospel. Time-box in voice: half ammo, temperature X, or Engine ping. The checklist is the short version.
What 2026 added to the map without naming pins
- Tutorial level with extra objectives — learn cab gauges here, not in a vault. Getting Started.
- Tundra expansion.
- Train-defense encounters inside obstacle-clearing, so a “quiet blockage” is a fight on the node itself.
- Modular dungeons, lighting, Relics.
- Clothing sets that change how far a given node is in heat-minutes.
Early Access (Q4 2026, about a year) is supposed to add more biomes, unique locations, more dungeons. When a named biome ships in Steam news, it gets a heading here. Until then, a Discord nickname for a hill is unofficial. Roadmap.
Routing a session
- Look at fuel and Heat before you pick a greedy vault. Train.
- Scout calls stop type: camp, village, wreck, bunker.
- Match guns to the type — shotgun clutter vs rifle streets. Weapons.
- Agree the exit: pilgrimage advance vs shrine optional.
- Walk home as a group. Sort on the train. Then the next node.
That is the map. Pins can wait for 1.0.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is there an official Frostrail map?
No public interactive map. The world is rail-directed: tundra, camps, villages, wreckage, vaults, dungeons. This page lists stop types, not GPS pins.
Do I have to clear every dungeon?
No. 2026 added levels with multiple exits. Leave when heat or ammo is the scarce resource.
What biomes exist?
Tundra is the named biome in 2026 notes. Early Access is supposed to add more. Treat extra names as unofficial until Steam news uses them.
